(Hilo, HI) The CSUMB volleyball team lost a five game heartbreaker to Hawai'i Pacific University 24-30, 30-26, 30-25, 27-30, 10-15 during the second day of competition in the Hawai'ian Style Classic in Hilo, HI.
The tournament schedule was not kind to the Otters as they followed their Friday evening match vs. host UH-Hilo with today's 9am start time against the Sea Warriors of HPU. After another slow start in game 1, the Otters looked very sharp in games 2 and 3, hitting an impressive .349 and .265 respectively as a team. Those numbers were a stark contrast to a disappointing .043 team hitting percentage in game 4 and -.143 in the deciding game 5.
"The team did respond to play very well for a span of time in games 2 and 3, which we need to build on and gain confidence from, " said head coach
Jody Garry. "The common theme this tournament is that our lack of physical and mental fitness is limiting our ability to achieve our full potential throughout the match. You always prefer to learn these valuable lessons and pull out a win, but that did not happen this morning."
Leading the way for CSUMB was Courtney Taubert with 20 kills and 17 digs while Christine Ricketts had her best showing of the tournament with 15 kills and an outstanding .542 hitting percentage. Brittany Etchings had a team high 20 digs to go with 13 kills. Freshman setter Dana Grimm, getting her first significant playing time of the tournament, handed out 40 assists for the match.
